A 330ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2012. Picked up a little while back from Great Grog in Edinburgh. The label states that this is a limited edition.
Poured into a Delirium chalice. Bottle conditioned. A very dark brown hue; appears black unless held to the light. Plentiful carbonation. Produces a huge head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a while before subsiding to a surface layer. Nice lacing. A forceful aroma of coffee - reminiscent of raw and freshly ground beans. This is underpinned by subtle hints of dark, roasted malt and faint stewed hops. The coffee rules....
Tastes of intense coffee bean notes - more like raw coffee grounds than prepared coffee. Very bitter and slightly 'green'. Hints of roasted malt and burnt grain. Little other flavour can be discerned. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with a mild spicy quality. A tad thin and insubstantial for the style. Pretty astringent, with an aftertaste of roasted coffee.
The experience is similar to being buried in coffee (in a good way). I rather like this, hence the high rating I've given it, but it would be fair to say that it's rather one-dimensional. Tons of coffee and little else, albeit quality coffee. Some malt, but other flavour components fail to come across. The body would benefit from being thicker and more substantial. Nonetheless, its character is well balanced; if you love coffee then this is the brew for you. All others should probably steer clear.
