Brewed by:
Knops Beer Company
Scotland, United Kingdom

Style: California Common / Steam Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.60%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This is an all malt brew using 2-row pale ale malt. A small amount of crystal malt is used to give the beer it’s deep golden colour and also contributes some light toffee notes to the flavour.

Whole hops are added in two stages. Our bittering hops are added at the beginning of the boil and provide a medium level of bitterness resulting in a subtle hop ‘bite’. Aroma hops are added 10 minutes before the end of the boil to provide a very light spicy aroma. Overall it has a clean hop finish.

California ale yeast (known for its clean flavours and balance) is used and fermentation is carried out at lower than usual temperatures resulting in a clean crisp finish.

The beer is conditioned at low temperature for a minimum of 21 days allowing the yeast to slowly continue its work.

500ml Bottle from Aldi Supermarket, UK:
Clear, bright amber with a thin, 1cm head that's bubbly before turnings fairly patchy.

Malty with some subdued hops & plenty of sweetness. Honey & caramel with some bread feature but it's the nose the dominates at the beginning before the sweetness takes over & some toffee makes an appearance as well.

Malty with some sweetness backing it up. There's some earthy hops & further malts coming through along with the caramel & toffee flavours. Toasted malts, biscuit & butterscotch, along with some bitterness come through too.

Medium with the odd light patch & the carbonation levels are about light-medium too & it's slightly creamy in places. Some bitterness features throughout as well & the beer is well balanced.

Decent but this must surely be false advertising, this one tastes almost nothing like I expected from a California Common, although it's not a style of beer that I'm overly familiar with; it seemed more like a standard English bitter to me. A pleasant beer but standard & not one I'd pick up again.

Pours honey blond and smells of hops, malt, and honey. It has a smooth, medium-sweet mouthfeel; it's wonderfully round. There is just a hint of hop tang at finish. It's very smooth and drinkable. The bottle I had tasted really fresh. This one is delicious.
