This was on special at the BJ's in Fresno CA. I believe this is what they had instead of an IPA. The appearance was a darker amber color with a white head. The bubblesa in the head seemed very large, like soap bubbles and the head lasted the whole beer. The was a good amount of lacing. The smell was very light with hints of malt, hops, and rye.
The taste of this beer was amazing, the was a nice bite in the front of hops, just like what you would expect from a good pale ale. On the back was the extreme bitterness thet the rye provided. There was nice balance of a carmelly malt, but this beer had a very strong rye flavor. The mouthfell was great, the CO2 was perfect and the thickness was that of an IPA. Your tongue felt like it was coated with rye oil when you were done drinking, it was great.
A great beer and one of the best I have had. It's like they made an IPA, but instead of a big dose of hops they used a big dose of RYE. If they would have only filled growlers at this BJ's, I would have been set.

I had this one at the Santa Barbara beer festival. BJ's of Oxnard had set up a booth and offered a few of their brews. Not bad at all!
A - Golden orange, syrupy carbonation with only a little head.
S - HUGE hoppy, grapefruit smell. Wow!
T - Powerful grapefruit juice flavor. Platte cleanser. Almost too much.
M - Fairly encompassing.
D - As strong a hop flavor as it has this is still quite an easy drink to down, and I don't really dig hops overload.

Appearance: This baby is unfiltered and pours a translucent orange...darker on the top and much lighter on the bottom. Capped with a single-finger of off white foam leaving a 90+% trail of lace on my Libby straight-side pint glass.
Aroma: While expecting a nose similar to Hop Rod Rye this taster was (pleasantly) caught off guard by the aroma of light citrusy hops...and lots of them!
Taste: Bright hop flavor consumes the senses during the initial taste, quickly followed by full bodied malt dominated by the rye. This is one of the very first rye beers I've had where I can actually pick up on the flavor of that particular grain...and my immediate response is; "Why don't more brewers do this?"
Mouthfeel: While the hops lend a nice grapefruit-like sweetness, it is perfectly balanced with a quality malt feel. Not too thick and definitely not thin...enhanced with a superb CO² balance
Drinkability: My highest drinkability ranking ever...multiple pints only increase the appreciation of this oh-so-fine beer!
