A growler of Special B from BJ's Woodland Hills location, courtesy of Boolshot. Consultation with the local LA BFG (drewbage) has led me to put this in the corporate site.
A: The ale has a mild brown color, reddish at times, with a nice head that has survived the cross country voyage.
S: Aroma is malty, chewy with a nice spicy undertone. Those spices are raisiny with candi sugar.
T: The flavor is heavy with candi sugar and thick molasses. There are raisins and a bit of warming alcohol that also emerge. I also taste some brown sugar sweetness and a bit of an earthy hop edge that keeps the ale from going overboard in the sweetness department. The deep molasses and brown sugar flavors give way to hints of anise-like licorice flavor.
M: The mouthfeel is full-bodied, almost chewy, but very pleasant. The sugars and raisins are enjoyable. The ale is full-flavored, almost a meal in and of itself.
D: The 8.5% abv is well hidden in the ale, greatly assisting the drinkability. The deep thick taste is perfect for cold Pennsylvania nights.
