Dark and roasty, on tap at CF taproom. Black with thin beige head, elements of fresh ground coffee and chocolate, wood and burnt toast. Short finish, but high ABV makes this a sipper.

Grim Reaper Black IPA purchased from the CoOp...I'm usually not one to swoon over appearances, but nice job on packaging Crooked Fence! 22oz bomber poured into a Deschutes tulip.

A: Very dense dark body...nearly opaque, with lots of light khaki head and lacing throughout the glass.

S: Herbal hop oil and grapefruit pith with a hefty roasted chocolate/almost burnt malt base...notes of coffee for sure. Touch of alcohol.

T: Lots of dark malt base, roast, chocolate, espresso, but with plenty of hops sprinkled 10% abv, there is a bit of an alcohol presence but nothing to write home about; masked pretty well. Good balance, probably the most balanced and most unique black IPA I've had. However that means the roast is very prominent...which is good in a hoppy stout or brown ale, but not necessarily what I want from a Black IPA.

MF: Moderate body with medium carbonation.‏..the roastiness balances the IPA component but there is a bit of hop oil slickness.

O: Definitely unique, pretty easy to drink...overall I think its good and enjoyable. Not sure how much the recipe has been tweaked.

I should have entered this review a time ago.. but was lazy instead.

Crooked Fence is a start-up brewery in the Boise area... but judging by their blog, they are doing things correctly from the get go.

COOP Matt (aka reinheitsgematt) provided one of these limited bottles at a recent tasting knowing that the brewers wanted feedback.... Here you go.

Pours deep dark brown... good clarity.. decent looking brown head... nice retention and lacing... clear ruby highlights toward the stem of my glass.

The nose is pretty spot-on (but light for anything "imperial") for a black IPA.. pine hops and a good dusting of cocoa.... not as roasty as many of their bigger brethren... and really not as much hop in the aroma either.

Flavor has more "black malt astringency" than expected... I would hope for light coffee or roasty flavors... hop bitterness is very nice... mild cocoa mid palate that is pulled out by a very slight malt sweetness... hop flavors are very piney and seem a bit one dimensional.. could use maybe some citrus varieties in there.

Body is a shade light of medium... but that is fine... the carbonation is good.

Really... my "complaints" are minor... I personally would like more "uummpph" in the hop flavor additions and more of a spectrum of hop flavors.. a touch more sweetness will help meld all the flavors, but don't go overboard.... For the aroma, a good dry hop or flame-out addition will add some complexities.. Also, maybe too much black malt bitterness... but meh.. I don't know.

Also, I don't know if the label was correct.... but 6.5%... I think bumping it up a percent and adding some sweetness will make the body more into the "imperial" range.

I hope the good folks at Crooked Fence approve... I tried to be honest and not a homer. Nice brew for sure with potential to be dialed in and and be great.

Cheers folks.

I will RE-review/edit once bottles hit shelves/kegs hit bars and the brewers finds sea legs. I am super stoked though that another brewer making nice brews. Congratulations.
