Just like the other reviewers, I had a REALLY hard time with this brew. One of those instances when a beer sounds a lot better than its execution. 22oz waxed bomber with no description poured into my Rock Island snifter.

A: Dark transparent brown body with pretty much no head retention.

S: Heavy on the vanilla extract, definitely strong in that department. Everything else is overwhelmed by the decadent sweetness; the malt component is buried.

T: Strooong vanilla bordering on...cherry cordial? Everything else lays beneath that; very light roast character, with a finish that seems burnt. The vanilla lingers FOREVER.

MF: Medium light, and moderate carbonation but not enough to cleanse the palate. Finishes dry.

O: Starts out nice but this beer is instantly overwhelming to the senses. Overall I wouldn't recommend it unless I knew someone was crazy about vanilla; even then, I don't think they'd like this...

#1 of 6 in the Exiled Series.

22 picked up at the COOP tonight for a very pricey $9... Poured into my slim tulip it shows a dark tan head with good lacing and not so good retention.. the brew is not black but slightly hazed dark walnut brown.

Nose smells pretty light... minor dark malts.. light chocolate... and vanilla extract that makes it smell too sweet.

Vanilla shines from front to back on the palate and lingers long after the sip goes down the gullet.. too much and out of balance... stout flavors are there, but are completely blown out of the water by the vanilla... and what stout notes are available seem watery and not fully formed.

Body is light and a light carbonation does nothing to scrub the vanilla off my tongue..

Not a fan.. I am not gonna say it is a drain-pour, but I am not going to waste $5 of beer... Sorry.. but this one needs a big reworking.

The only reason I would buy this one again is so I have a complete set of the Exiled series to either trade away or open with my tasting group.

Presentation: Poured from a 22oz, wax dipped bottle into a goblet.

A: Black-brown liquid. Hardly any light showing through. Ok head retention with minimal lacing.

S: A milk milk chocolate aroma that isn't too overpowering. A good amount of dark malt aromas with hints of roastiness around the edges. I get a citrusy overtone here that I'm not a huge fan of but it isn't a huge distraction and doesn't detract too much from the overall aroma.

T: This has a water-like quality to it. There seems to be a real lake of flavors going on with this one. There is an overall bitterness that is pervasive throughout but there is a lack of any real flavor to accompany it. There is some roastiness and some light malt flavors. From the brewer's description this has an in-house vanilla extract made from vanilla beans and bourbon but I can't detect any such flavors.

M: LIght, almost watery. Really lacking in body here in my opinion. There is also a lack of carbonation which causes the body to feel even lighter than it already does.

Overall this beer has really lacking in flavor and mouthfeel. The aroma wasn't too bad but there wasn't anything special about it. The taste was very watery and the beer really lacks flavor and body. It's a shame since I really enjoy a lot of the beers this brewery makes but this one falls short and definitely needs some work.
