Hartmann-Bräu "Hartmann Erbschänk 1550"
,5L brown glass bottle, "Mindestens haltbar bis: 18.11.17F" and sampled on 25.09.17
8,50€/sixpack at the Brauerei Gasthof
Notes via stream of consciousness: 5,2% ABV. What a wonderful bier to enjoy on this cool fall evening in Salzburg overlooking Schallmooser Haupstraße with the "mountian" that is the Park Kapuzinerberg literally at my back. The beer is chestnut brown in color beneath a finger-thick head of creamy off-white that's holding quite well, and which has left some very nice lacing where it has fallen. The aroma is nutty and lightly chocolatey. It's bright and fresh and welcoming. The flavor follows although it's not quite as rich as the aroma suggests. There's some caramel to it, some apple-like fruitiness, and a touch of grassy hops as well. A stiff bitterness anchors it and it finishes dry with some light chocolate and mildly spicy and grassy hops lingering. It's medium to medium-light in body and gently crisp. Overall it's got a lot of character to it, and a lot of flavor while not going overboard with maltiness or hop flavors. It's well brewed, superbly balanced, satisfying, and highly drinkable.

500ml bottle. "best by" of 12 11 08, but i was assured they have been refrigerated the whole time...
dark brown with red hues. clear. light tan head fades to thin layer, then just wisps. thin rings of lace at first, with more later on.
caramel, cola and even some molasses in the nose, with an almost phenolic, almost buttery note. light, grassy noble hop. hint of raisins underneath.
more caramel flavor and molasses notes to the malt, quickly counteracted by moderately bitter noble hops, finish with additional note of moderate phenols. bitterness lingers.
not too thin. faint flash of astringency in the finish. carbonation is fizzy and prickly, but not overdone.
