Picked up a small growler fill of this earlier today with the regular Boris the Spider for a side-by-side introduction to this beer. Think the ABV is the same as the regular, but apparently this is Boris aged on Jack Daniels soaked Oak. both brews poured into oversized SH snifters.
a - poured just like the regular boris but there definitely is a bit of a boozy shine on the beer.
s - oh wow, distinctly different from Boris. the wood comes out, but the booze soakedness, not as much. seems much more chocolatey than the regular but the sweetness is pulled back and replaced by fresh cut wood...it actually reminds me of a cedar. it is a nice touch on the base beer.
t - again, a HUGE difference from the regular Boris. the oak aging really twists this beer and almost glazes it with potpouri. the booze is there, but it is such a wonderful compliment to the beer. this is one of the more unique tasting wood aged beers that i've tried. the wood really embarks a strong vanilla characteristic and i definitely get hints of sour mash.
m - the heat is on in this version. it drinks like a beer with a shot of whiskey in it. at times when bouncing back and forth from the original, the sweetness from the booze is a bit cloying.
o - overall think arrogant bastard vs oaked arrogant bastard...same effect, but with some sour mash whiskey. the base beer...Boris...is pretty impressive and this is a very interesting twist on the original. the overall affect of the wood is a positive one. it adds a glaze of boozy woody sweetness. very pleasantly surprised to not only see the locals knocking it out of the park with a beer in my favorite style, but to see a wood aged treatment is the icing on the cake. i eagerly look forward to more from this local newbie. cheers to spider bite!
