Deep, ebony black in color with a head of tan foam that quickly collapses into the body of the beer. Darker than your typical Barleywine. Intense aromas of bourbon, brandy, and strong spirits that don't hide the high ABV. Savory and slightly overwhelming. Medium bodied and slightly oily on the palate. Black pepper, molasses, bold Sumatran coffee, wine-like tannins, and loads of umami. Boozy beyond the style's typical range, Ochre Frumento is in a class of its own. There are elements of Old Ale and Imperial Stout here. A touch of malty sweetness and dark chocolate in the finish complete the sip. Memorable and full of flavor, this beer nonetheless suffers from a bit of an identity crisis.
