Cask at Stone's Chuckapalooza during San Diego Beer Week 2010.
A: 8oz pour into an 8oz glass. Pours black as pitch with a great cask head that's huge, creamy, dark brown, silky, and lingers for quite some time.
S: A decadent blend of chocolate, bourbon, and oak. What it lacks in balance it makes up for in unabashed bourbon glory. The oak really comes out when it warms, and alcohol is definitely noticeable. The beer has an interesting perfumey dark fruit thing going on that I can't adequately describe, so I'll just use a silly descriptor like the one you can read at the beginning of this sentence. Oak and bourbon really dominate the nose, with a decent amount of dark chocolate as well.
T: Dark chocolate, oak, and a lot of bourbon. It also has a slight dark fruit edge to it that I wasn't expecting, but it fits pretty well, reminds me almost of a ripe red grape or an overripe plum, but it's very subtle. Oak is drying on the palate, and alcohol creates a warming sensation in the bourbon laden finish.
M: A nice creamy cask mouthfeel with some trailing stickiness. Carbonation is at an upper low level, body is lower full.
Overall: A tasty beer, but I think Green Flash was wise to blend in some non barrel aged Double Stout to create Silva as I think that's a superior beer.
