On tap at Beachwood BBQ and Brewing.
A: Red tinged dark brown with a massive beige head which exhibits remarkable retention and leaves lots of lacing on the glass as it recedes.
S: Caramel blends with dark toffee, earth, and brown sugar. There's a touch of maple. This is very rich. I get a lot of dark fruit: plum, prune, date, and raisin. Smells excellent.
T: Rich toffee with brown sugar and caramel. There's a touch of oxidation in the flavor. Notes of plum, date, and prune are evident. There's a lower moderate level of earthy bitterness.
M: Upper medium body with moderate carbonation.
Overall: A very good Barleywine. I missed this during San Diego Beer Week so I'm glad I was finally able to try it.

On-tap at Beachwood II,
A: Pours a medium red brown with a medium off-white head, some spotty lace.
S: Strong malt notes, toffee and oak, biscuit, with a noticable piney hop profile.
T: Sweet malt flavour, toffee again, some barrel with a boatload of hops. Pine, cedar and a bit of citrus. Great taste.
M: Full-bodied, smooth for its style, resiny for sure.
O: This is a fantastic barleywine, I wish I could of had more, but I had to drive home.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing
A: The beer pours a clear, dark amber with a small off-white head.
S: Not the most intense or complex nose. It's mostly just sweet caramel and toffee with some brown sugar and molasses. There's a little bit of vanilla and mild booze and a light pine note from the hops.
T: Sweet toffee and stale sugar start things off on the palate. There's a mild cardboard flavor as well as caramel and brown sugar. A decent dose of booze along with vanilla (is this barrel aged?). Minimal hop flavor and bitterness.
M: The body is medium with a fairly smooth, medium carbonation.
O: There are some nice aspects to this beer, but overall it's just sort of sweet with a little booze.

Had this beer on tap at Toronado in San Diego on May 30th, 2011. Said Green Devil on the board, it is a Barrel Aged Barleywine, seems similar in it's barrels to Silva Stout.
A: Pretty Black color, odd for a barleywine. Would have thought it was a stout, but it has a nice ring of head and great lacing so I can't complain too much here.
S: Outstanding barrel use on this beer, the oak and spirit (I think it's a whiskey) spring from the glass. Some dark fruit and barley cereal hide underneath the barrel aromas along with some candy like sweetness.
T: This is a great mix of whiskey sweet and savory with flavors like ripe fruit a la a Belgian Strong Ale, licorice, vanilla, and barley cereal malt.
M: A little hot right now, but still a nice beer that isn't hard to put down.
Overall this is nice, and would love it if they released bottles I could trade for to age in the cellar.
