A 500ml bottle with a BB of Oct 2011, so it's a little out of date. The label mentions that this ale was brewed using unkilned green hops, which presumably adds a hoppy zest to the flavour. I believe this bottle is from last year's harvest (1 year old), so I don't know if the hop notes have held up....
Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A rich amber colour with good carbonation. Produces a decent head of white foam that lasts for a couple of minutes before collapsing to a surface layer. Aroma is a bit one-dimensional; sweet caramel malt with hints of toffee and a fair whiff of diacetyl.
Tastes of sweet malt with a mild, dry finish. Notes of caramel/toffee and faint stewed hops. No aromatic hops to speak of. A distinct buttery flavour makes an appearance in the background. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly but a little thin. Slightly astringent, with an aftertaste of buttery malt.
Not brilliant - the malt is there so at least half the ingredients showed up. I was hoping for a distinct aromatic hop component, so this was a disappointment. The only caveat I will insert is that this was an old bottle, so perhaps the hop flavours faded over time. Try to find it fresh on cask. At any rate - nothing special.
