A 500ml bottle with a BB of June 2019. Picked up recently from Home Bargains. The label describes it as a gluten-free golden ale brewed exclusively with British hops: Admiral, Pilgrim, Pilot and Cascade are used.
A: Poured into a pint mug. A crystal-clear golden colour with plentiful carbonation. Forms a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a minute or so before subsiding to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of stewed hops with hints of leafiness, fruity ale yeast, grainy malt and husks. Smells a tad harsh. Not great.
T: Tastes of stewed hops with notes of leafiness, herbs, mild hay, fruity ale yeast, grain, pale malt and a touch of overdone veg. Pretty dry, followed by an acrid, stringent bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with lively carbonation and decent body. Rather astringent; dries the palate. Aftertaste of bitter stewed leaves, subtle ale yeast and mild grainy malt.
O: Hmmm - this one digs too far into the well of bittering hops without appropriate malt character to provide balance. Looks alright, however the aroma and flavour are quite conventional and unusually bitter. Pretty average body. A bit too harsh on the palate to be considered drinkable. With the list of hops on the label, you could also be forgiven for expecting something more in the aroma department. No need to hunt it down.
