Appearance: pours a dark reddish amber color with a nice 2" head that lasts a long time. Some lace paints the glass.

Smell: toffee and dark fruit sweetness is easy to pick up by the nose.

Taste: toffee, red apples, plums, grapefruit, lemon zest, a bit of pine, some chaulkiness, and a big hearty bitterness are the main flavors.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Lightly crsip to start, smoother and a touch dry at the finish.

Overall: a decent red IPA that is slower drinking than others. Mildly refreshing.

Consumed on April 10th, 2013 from a Samuel Adams pint glass.

Beer is a hue somewhere between caramel brown and deep red. A two finger Beige head quickly forms, diminishing soon to a thin skin and nice lacing down the side of the glass.

Aroma is primarily sweet, caramelized brown sugar.
A woody note is also apparent.

Flavor is similar to nose. Sweet malt, a dark, juicy
fruitiness and a wood like bitterness on the finish.
Slightly tingly and parching.

Medium bodied, well carbonated.

The bottle claims this is a red India pale ale, but it really is more like an imperial red.
Not at all bad, but neither is it essential.

They call this a Red IPA so the dark ruby brown color seems appropriate, not to mention the knife and heart on the label. Suds up nicely on pouring into the Duvel glass and there is actually some nice lacing swirling around.

The flavor is more of a surprise. It is so earthy and musty I wondered if I was missing some secret ingredient. I guess it's just wads of hops of some funky variety. The hoppy bitterness comes on strong and lingers through the rest of the tasting. On the plus side the caramel and roast malt flavors are quite nice. A hint of sweetness and a medium body. Some odd fruitiness of dried apricots along with something like browned pecan rolls

From the 22 oz bottle bought at Liticker's Liquor & Deli in Ocean Beach.

Consumed yesterday
*1 pint 6 FL OZ. into a standard pint glass

A: Pour is a great looking crimson red like how the style is supposed. Nice clarity too on such a deep ruby amber. Cakey beige head with some fantastic stay power. Splotchy lace clings to the glass throughout the drink. Exemplary to the style.

S: Smells of some highly kilned malts lending to a rich caramel note with some wafts of spiced citrus (grapefruit). I get a bit of roast coffee, some light booze, and just a hint of chocolate as well.

T: Tastes of roasted caramel toffees mixed with sour orange and spice. Light coffee notes and Rasinettes integrate nicely and are attributed to the use of Roasted Barley here. This beer has a nice moderate level of bitterness that brings forth some stemmy herbal notes towards the finish. Light warming alcohol. All in all a really nice American Amber.

M: Moderate feel with a slight malty chew on it. Nice even carbonation gives a very smooth texture overall. There is a soft puckering from the hops that lingers on with a dryer feel towards the finish.

D: This is a very nice red and nearing as good as AleSmith’s Evil Dead. Has a spicier flavor component with a bit more restrained alcohol to it but a real solid intro to Aztec for me. Malty with enough IBU’s to balance. Looking forward to trying their other offerings.

Worth checking out.

This is the first time I have tasted this beer so it's hard to review! First of all the label is well done! It makes you want to buy one right away! The bottle was filled to the cap so when I popped it open there was very little CO2 escape! There was very little head on the pour and the beer was lightly carbonated. The color is great with deep red and browns and the SRM is right on with it's style! The nose was nice and caramelly but the hops didn't not come through very strong until I tasted the Beer. Hints of roasted barley and the Crystal 80L or 90L was right there! I did not pick up on the toffee as the label had suggested. I tasted hints of Citra and possibly Fuggle? This is not a very high IBU IPA but just fine for an IPA newby! The finish was quick but smooth and mellow. I wished the body was slightly more robust throughout . Overall Sacrifice is a good drinking beer! I would not pay $9.00 for a 22oz bottle again though. I would rather try a pint at the Brewery sometime. Cheers!

Thanks to drewone for sharing this one at jmgrub's tasting.

Pours a clear orange-brown with a foamy tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt and some earthy and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is drinkable but nothing all that special.
