Appearance: Clear yellow-gold, small head does not stick around long.

Smell: Very low aroma, hints of cardboard and caramel.

Taste: Neutral arrival, then slightly sour grainy flavor. Pretty light bodied, maybe a little fizzy. Finishes with the light sourness.

Overall: Another single from Minhas, not terrible but not particularly good either. Wet sour grains is an interesting flavor but not what I'm really looking for in a lager.

It’s a pleasant, easy drinking summer beer. As far as Miller, Coors, Bud or Old Style goes…this is right there. Don’t expect too much and just enjoy it.

12 oz. can, no date. Acquired from the local Binny's. My can states a 5.0% abv. Beer / Biere. "Refreshing as Wisconsin's Northwoods".

A: Pours a golden orange sort of color, much darker than I was expecting. Not the light yellow piss color I would have thought. Small finger of sudsy white head. Appears adequately carbonated. Looks aite.
S: Hugely sweet, tons of apple & fermented orchard fruit. Tons of sugar, fallen apple, pear, peach. Again, not what I was expecting.
T: Taste is the same - almost like a watery mulled wine. Lots of fermented apple / pear / orchard fruit. Some notes of papery cardboard water in the finish.
F: Thin, watery, papery, sugary, syrupy.. Carb is ok, i guess.

Overall, not good. Probably the only thing in common with classic Rhinelander is the name..

This is a beer for the man on a budget. We used to drink this by the case in college but in returnable bottles. It's a no frills beer which when consumed in proper amounts will get the job done!

Super light straw yellow, think Natural Light levels of water here. Can't hold a head. Aroma was macro warehouse stuff and mild corn.

Taste, relatively bitter hops that offer no flavor. Corn more than barley taste. Midwest as fug. Sweetness. Bitter. Cheap beer. This is a regional AAL. Warm day fishing, why not. Cool off after golf? Ok. It has its place.

This stuff used to come in returnable bottles. Maybe it still does.

Shorty into a Duvel tulip.

A: Clear deep gold body with a thin cap of fine white head. Ok retention and clingy lace. Pretty good.

S: Crackery malt, cooked vegetables, corn, and butter. All the off notes actually work ok together, but it's pretty weak.

T: Buttered squash, toasted bread, and some minerality. Corn and diacetyl on the harsh finish. Not good at all.

M: Light-to-medium body with a fairly high dose of prickly carbonation. Not bad, not great.

O: I do genuinely enjoy the nostalgia of the Rhinelander shorty, as I grew up fishing with my dad on a lake near Rhinelander (during the period between the original brewery going under and Minhas resurrecting this zombie version of the beer), and he would call sub-legal bass "Rhinelander shorties." It's fun getting to stock the cabin fridge with these, even if only my MGD-loving mother actually thinks they're decent beers. At least my dad now has the sense to drink New Glarus.

Cheers!

Bought a case of stubby bottles because it was both cheap and awesome looking. Wasn't until I got in the car that I bothered to check where it was brewed and yep, crap, Monroe, meaning Minhas, meaning the bane of beerness.

But, fuck it, approach this with an open mind.

Pours light, about average for the style. Smells fine, too, which is a pleasant surprise. Very weak, but some lightly metallic adjuncts against little hints of barley.

Tastes like it smells, only with a back end that's overun with Minhas' trademarked soapy chemical badness. Thankfully said badness is here nowhere near as pronounced as it is in most of their beers--owing probably to the total faintness of this one.

I could actually finish it, which is a step up from this brewer's usual beers. Only that may have just been because the bottle was so small, come to think of it...
