650ml bottle, more replicated (I presume) nonsense from one of Minhas' best customer contracts.

This beer pours a clear, very dark red brick amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and rocky beige head, which leaves some purdy and consistent cobwebbed lace around the glass as it slowly subsides. Credit where credit is due, people.

It smells of semi-sweet bready caramel malt, crotchety yeast, rotten oranges, wet pine needles, and abject sadness, here represented by the nasal-twitching alcohol. The taste is nutty, thin caramel malt, stale red orchard fruit - apple skin and cherry pits - putrefied yeast, plastic bottle vodka-dipped orange rind, and weirdly leafy, earthy, and dead pine tree hops.

The bubbles are average in their weakly frothy bearing, the body an adequate medium weight, and smooth in the way of your last telephone banking operator - 'I'm sorry sir, the way we are financially fucking you over is out of my control'. It finishes on the sweet side, plain Jane caramel malt, Zeller's quality brown sugar, and the suggestion of a hint of an enigma of generic hop bitterness. Oh, and booze - can't forget the booze.

Yeah, not the worst thing these operators have produced over the years, but still not actually good, or even particularly drinkable, unless you factor in the super undercutting retail bomber price, and mostly unseen (were that it was that way much, much sooner), and unheard Minhas house nastiness. Ok, I suppose, if you just need to get 'er done, but otherwise, a drainpour.

Pitch black appearance with a small amount of bubbly head that quickly settles down leaving some lacing. Smell consists of hops, caramel, roasted malt, toffee and some sweetness.

Taste consists mainly of hops, caramel, smokiness, malt and coffee. Picked up a hint of sweetness, coffee, raisins and grape. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finish is a bitter, smoky malt taste.

Overall, first American Strong Ale and thought it was pretty decent. It has a lot of strong dark features that’s good to be savored. Worth a try if you come across it.
