Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, pitch-black color with an eighth of finger of chocolate/caramel-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that only partially covered the top of the beer.
Aroma: Very aromatic with tons of roasted malt, which imparts aromas of freshly toasted dark bread, some subtle smoke, lots of dark chocolate and brown sugar. There’s also a hint of licorice and vanilla. Earthy, rich, and inviting.
Taste: Delicious! Tons of roasted malt up front, earthy and bready, followed by lots of brown sugar-like sweetness and lots of dark chocolate, with hints of vanilla and caramel as well as lots of beautifully balanced smoke. This beer borders on rauchbier-levels, but doesn’t quite reach it, which to me is fantastic!
Mouthfeel: Slightly chewy and pretty smooth as there is very little in the way of carbonation. With an ABV of 8%, there is only a hint of alcohol on the palate.
Overall: This is an excellent, excellent, smoked porter, from a brewery I’ve never heard of! Malty, sweet, chocolaty and smoky. Delicious!
