this beer is incredibly good, and super unique for a bourbon barrel aged dark brew, which seems like something every brewery is doing these days. i loved this, the lagered porter aspect really comes through, tons and tons of dark chocolate, doughy drying yeast in the finish, and a little less of the bitter dark roasted grains we would normally find in a stout of this magnitude. instead, it gets some of its bitter and earthy elements from the barrel itself it seems, some char and wood working here, with more of that bakers chocolate too. the bourbon isnt as sweet as it can be in other contexts, and i think the generally drier base beer helps with that. soft vanilla, light caramel, and a lot of wood, its very mellow and mature, and its delicious! tons of body, not quite syrupy but pretty darn thick, maybe a slight hint of oxidation to it, which i dont mind in this context, a toasted coconut layer, and bright wood to finish with the chocolate. very little booze is evident here even though its a strong one, and the aftertaste is gloriously whiskey forward. a great slow sipper, and another impressive offering from these guys, who seem to be making beers across a wide range of styles that are well ahead of the quality curve. id love to get my hands on the other beers in this volumes of oak series! keep up the good work folks!
