A new seasonal at Titletown, and the first time that their brewer, Bill, has tried the style. From what I can tell, he's got a winner!
Poured into a small goblet, about a 12oz pour (and for only $2.00! Gimme a break!!). Possesses a long-lasting, tan, frothy head....sits at about 1/4" for at least 10-15 minutes after the pour and then verry slowly fades to a thin layering. Lovely lacing coats the glass besides the head, all atop a brew with a deep, clear garnet/ruby-colored brew. Nose has a distinct west-coast hop lean to it, with piney notes, along with a sweet malty base. My only real disappointment was in the body category. Though it had a solid smoothness and passes easily across the tongue, it lacked a smidge in body. It was just about medium, though I was really looking for, and expecting, something with more chewiness. Upon speaking with Bill, the Brewmeister, he acknowledged this slight lack of oomph, albeit due to the fact he did not want it being too sweet for the crowd he was aiming it for. Flavor, though, makes up for it. Has a solid malt start, with lovely sweetness without being over the top. Gives me hints of brown sugar and toffee qualities. Then comes the real loveliness: the hops! They're resiny, piney and citrussy altogether, coating the tongue with a lovely lupulin kick! Reminds me of a Bigfoot clone! Bill showed me the recipe the next day on a tour, and a cursory glance revealed some Magnum and Chinook hops, in addition to 2-3 other varieties added at varying times during the boil. This is a real nice bier! I could easily find myself ensconsed in the old train depot that Titletown is, with a strong NW wind blowing snow across the nearby river, and all the while I am quaffing the Blitzen, easily staying warm, and getting "Blitzed" throughout the eve....
Zum Wohl!!
