What a beer! Downtown Brown is brand spanking new at Titletown and I am fricking thrilled that I am here in Green Bay to drink a few gallons of it. The disclaimer on the chalk board is true
this aint no wussy British nut beer
this is an American Brown Ale!
Appearance: Crayola brown body. Thick creamy white head that dissipates to 1/8 inch skim with moderately clingy lace qualities.
Aroma: Massive amounts of chocolate cake, grapefruit, and pine resin.
Taste: I was initially hit by the heavy amounts of chocolate malt in the flavor. It really came on strong at first and tasted just like the chocolate cake mom used to make. After half a pint or so, however, my ability to taste any malt was long gone.
This is an Imperial Brown if such a style exists. The intensity of the hops is enough to rival many DIPAs. My palate focused in on citrus hops during the first pint, mostly grapefruit, but also some orange, lemon, and passion fruit as well. Then, after my taste buds began to quiver under the hop strain, pine resin became the dominant flavor. By the end of my second pint, I felt as if I were walking through a bristlecone forest.
Mouthfeel: There is almost no carbonation to this beer. Its light to medium bodied, slightly creamy, and not quite, but almost, blisteringly bitter. Very much unbalanced toward hoppy bitterness but in a way that I can certainly appreciate.
Drinkability is very high. This beer is sessionable. An A+ to the still fairly new brewer for this one.
