A 500ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2012. Picked up ages ago from Beeritz in Knaresborough. The brewery is based in the Cleveland Hotel in Redcar, and their beers have a seaside theme going on. This one is described as a premium red ale.
Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A deep chestnut-maroon colour with good carbonation. Forms a small off-white head of foam that lasts for a minute or two before dissipating. Aroma of sweet, nutty malt with hints of caramel, brown sugar and dried fruit. Mild stewed hops and a faint solventy twang in the background.
Tastes of caramel malt with a mild, dry finish. Notes of subtle dried fruit and stewed hops. A weak bitterness upon swallowing, with hints of cardboard in the background. Mouthfeel is smooth with decent body, but rather flat and textureless. Aftertaste of mild caramel malt.
A bit dull; not much going on. I want to like it more but there just isn't enough character to it. Slightly sweet malt and little else. Quite drinkable, and I could imagine having a session with this, but it doesn't excite the senses. No need to seek it out.
