Drank at home in a tulip glass poured from a growler ~48 hours after having the growler filled at the brewery.

Look: Dark-ish but not fully black and opaque... pours with a nice head.
Smell: Esters, reminds me of quads/barleywines a bit. Maybe molasses or dried fruit? Very pleasant smell.
Taste: Those same sweet, perhaps slightly fruity esters combine with a roasted malt/burnt flavor in a really enjoyable way. Extremely drinkable for an 8.3% stout. Lasts in the palate for a decent amount of time after swallowing.
Feel: If you hold the beer in your mouth, you notice the alcohol burn a little more. Warm, and as I said, it drinks quite easily for a beer of its ABV. I'd call the carbonation moderate, perhaps.

Overall: I'd have to call this my favorite of Final Gravity's beers that I've tried so far. Great sipper for relaxing at home. Highly recommend trying this if you visit their brewery. I don't have a ton of experience with stouts, so I can't compare it very well in terms of complexity, but I found the combination of fruity/sweet esters and roasted malt to be very good, and it's very drinkable.

 

 

 

On-tap at Final Gravity Brewing Co., Richmond, VA

A: The beer is black when viewed from afar. When held up to the light there are traces of dark reddish brown at the edges of the glass. It poured with a thin tan collar and lots of lacing on the surface.
S: Light aromas of dark malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has flavors of dark malts along with notes of roasted malts. There is a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation with some dryness in the finish.
O: This beer is easy to drink, but you need to let it warm up to let the flavors develop.

Enjoyed this at their location on Lakeside Avenue in Richmond. Tried several that they had on tap. This and their Firehouse red ale were my favorites.

 

Poured on tap at the brewery in a snifter, the beer is a muddled, brownish-black coloring, with a foamy, clingy, light tan head. Aromas of heavily roasted coffee, bitter and robust, with nutty and subtle cream highlights. Flavors are rich and robust, with a bitter blast of coffee forward. Roasted, with hints of char, and solid nutty highlights. Hints of bittersweet cacao nibs, tangy cream, and subtle caramel, with earthy overtones throughout. Smooth, dry, and chewy in mouth, with a charred and bitter roasted coffee aftertaste. The finish is bold, but light and dry for the long haul. Very solid beer.

 

 

Poured a brown body with touch of lace that is left from minimal head. Aroma is mostly roasted malts with hint of bitter chocolate and no discernible hops. Fuller bodied, slightly sticky which makes a slow sipper, is mostly a dry, roasted malt stout but not too dry thanks a bitter chocolate sweetness that adds variety to beer. Hints of dark fruits come out on finish and there also might be caramel/toffee sweetness as well. Beer is a little bit all over the place when it comes to background tastes but they work and beer isn't offputting or "weird" (for lack of a better word) at all and quite enjoyable.

 

A: Dark black in color, with just a hint of chestnut brown when held to the light, large tan head that lingers for quite a while.

S: Dark malt with some lovely sweetness. Dark chocolate, caramel, and perhaps a touch of oatmeal. Perhaps some dark berries in there as well, with a hint of earthiness in the finish.

T: Malty goodness. Very rich, with overtones of caramel, molasses, and licorice. Sweet, but the finish has a nice earthy bitterness that keeps this from being cloying. The heap of caramel flavor is balanced well by the hops.

M: Medium in body, with fairly active carbonation. I'd like to see a little creamier mouthfeel on this, but that's fairly minor.

O: Overall I'm real impressed with what Tony is doing at OG/SG. This is the first beer I have reviewed from them, and judging from this, I have a lot to look forward to. Fine work.
