“Remember, remember, the fifth of November, the Gunpowder Treason and plot.” Inspired by a notorious British villain, Guy Fawkes Brown ale blends English malt and American hops to create a slightly smoky well-rounded brown ale.

Bold and kind of nutty, it has a thicker than it looks feel in the mouth, and it is easy to drink. I’ve had it in a can and at Black Abbey and unlike some of the beer I’ve had both taste great.

Blending British malts with American hops shows that both countries can get along, right? The Black Abbey borrows the English brown ale and gives it a little modern facelift.

Pouring a deep brown appearance, Guy Fawks brings a frothy off-white cap and a toasty, chocolaty, nutty scent with a twinge of yogurt. Sweet once on the tongue, a milder caramel and toffee mix highlights the malts while drifting along with heavy toast, dark chocolate, roasted pecan and a hint of coffee. Trending malty-dry and shifting toward a slightly bitter finish, the hop bite seems more of a coffee type of balance than hops.

Medium-full in body, the dark ale is rather refreshing one while delivering on bold flavor. Only a light grain-derived astringency detracts from an otherwise stellar session.

Poured into a pint glass. A crystal-clear copper-brown color with a thick tan head. Outstanding foam retention. More aromatic than I expected with nutty, roasted grain and subtle plum and raisin. The taste followed suit with the above flavors. Medium bitterness with floral and grassy notes. Light-to-medium bodied with a clean feel. One of the easiest-drinking beers I've had in a while. A great brown ale.

Pours brown small light tan bar pour head. Aroma is toasted malts light nuttiness that's about it. Taste is light toasted malts very light nuttiness in the flavor. Mouthful seems little light but carbonation is mellow. Overall not a bad beer seems little light for a good brown ale though. The Black Abby definitely had better brews then this one available.
