On-tap
A dark chestnut brown body. The head had nearly completely faded by the time it got to my table, only a thin off-white collar around the edges. Strong ethanol notes on the nose with a good amount of astringency I could only equate to artificial coffee. Dark roast and toffee with some brandy notes hidden in there. On the palate, astringent coffee, dark roasted malt, toffee, brandy, and molasses. There was something amiss here. The astringent coffee flavors dominated, really taking away from the rest of the beer. The body was pretty thin in comparison to the appearance. On the light side of medium with fairly active carbonation. Prickly mouthfeel. A fairly decent attempt on the style, but the apple brandy barrel aging was fairly muted and the body was just way too thin.

Poured out as a dark brown color with a soapy looking head on top, not all that appealing lolling really. The smell of the beer was a little on the musty side with some light spice notes and a touch of roasted malts. The taste of the beer was average at best, no real depth or complexity to this beer at all. The flavors of earth and some minimal spice were in there. The mouthfeel was watery and thin. Overall I wasn't really into this brew all that much. Kind of disappointing.

First had: on tap at Blue Dog Tavern, Chalfont, PA
Poured a murky russet color with a thin cap of whitish head that quickly receded to a mere few stray bubbles. Lively carbonation apparent when held up to the light. Dark malts in the nose, accompanying by some boozy heat and mild phenols. Taste of dark malts, mild boozy notes from the apple brandy it was aged in, but surprisingly not too much of this element...and from other beers I've had that use Laird's, it typically imparts a good amount of taste from the brandy. Lesser hints of molasses, brown sugar, raisins, wet cardboard, and used tea bags. Slightly chewy mouthfeel, about medium-bodied, and fairly decent overall, though just not quite up to par with other beers of the style.
