This imperial milk stout was aged in bourbon barrels with whole vanilla beans. Madagascar pours a dark black with notes of bourbon, chocolate and vanilla.

Dec 2019 can, consumed Oct 2021. Pours black, not really showing a nitro characteristic. Light chocolate nose, hint of vanilla. Taste vanilla forward, and I appreciate it.

I dunno, maybe I'm just getting burned out on vanilla, but this was not as high-caliber as I was expecting from Madagascar. I don't feel like the nitro can adds anything positive to the experience.

So I did get nitro with my can, shook it a lot, cascading nitro, frothy and creamy head and body, but I think it broke up so much of the depth that made the original so great. This is still fine, huge vanilla, chocolate, sweet malts, molasses and very light bourbon. Found the smell gets more of the barrel depth than taste, again nitro killed the stout star, go figure. Feel is creamy, pillowy, and extremely cool for a BA beer. In a vacuum I might have again, but knowing the original is perpetually on the shelf in town I doubt I'll ever choose the nitro option

12oz can. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light brown head of foam. Didn't look nitro. Smelled of vanilla, chocolate, roasted malt and toffee. Sweet chocolate and toffee taste with vanilla and coffee notes.

Released 1/12/20; drank 2/29/20 @ the Yarchives.
Black appearance.
A violent pour yielded a small nitro head; no lace.
Vanilla, dark chocolate & faint bourbon notes in the nose.
Creamy, flat medium mouthfeel.
Vanilla, dark chocolate & faint bourbon flavors; not an improvement on the original, but not as bad as I was lead to believe.

After reading that a few others had nitro issues (no nitro), I decided the shake the can a bit and pour hard. No nitro cascade effect, thin head that disappeared quickly. Smells like sweet vanilla and booze. Tastes great despite being flat. Vanilla, chocolate, and bourbon barrel. No creamy nitro mouthfeel. I'm glad to have Madagascar in 12 oz cans but they probably should remove "nitro" from the label.
