Aged in Booker’s bourbon barrels, Prehistoric Dog is one for the history books. Dark chocolate and brown sugar notes add depth, while flaked oats provide a touch of creaminess, creating a mosh pit of flavor with every sip. Once you try it, you’ll see why a metal song was fitting for this hard-hitting brew.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear thick viscous jet black in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising slowly along the edges of the glass and faint chestnut brown + dark cola brown colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy dark mocha head that slowly reduces to a large patch of thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Just shy of moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of roasted + dark + chocolate + caramel malts with moderate amounts of brown sugar + caramel sweetness and a light presence of dark fruit (cherry + fig + plum). Moderate aromas of dark chocolate as well as toasted oak, bourbon, caramel, and vanilla.

T: Upfront there are moderate to strong flavors of toasted + dark + chocolate + caramel malts with moderate amounts of brown sugar + caramel sweetness and a light presence of dark fruit (cherry + fig + plum). That is followed by moderate flavors of dark chocolate as well as toasted oak, bourbon, caramel, and vanilla. Light amounts of earthy hops and bourbon booziness in the finish which linger for a long time.

M: Just shy of full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Smooth with a light to moderate amount of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: Drinks pretty easily considering the strength - not a pounding beer but a very nice slow sipper. Enjoyable with a pleasant amount of complexity to the malts flavors which are complemented by the bourbon barrel aging.
