Pour is dirty brown / amber with a very light white head on top. Nose is heavy on the caramel, hints of brown sugar, molasses.
Taste starts out smooth and caramel-like before seguing into a lightly piney edge, not hoppy, just pine. the middle has strong bread characteristics, which pairs well with the caramel. Smooth, sweet finish. Alcohol characteristics are also present in the flavour which are not that noticeable at first, but which definitely build as the beer warms, eventually becoming a large flavour. The beer starts out at a good flavour, but it sinks below average as it warms. Consider the 3.0 I give it the average of the frosty cold and warmed up scores.
Mouthfeel, decent but nothing remarkable. Some hop action, some body, but nothing out of the usual for the style. Drinkability, solid. An easy drinking beer and inexpensive as well, 7$ for a growler fill, perfect for watching hockey with. As I allude to above it's best to drink this one relatively quickly, as it becomes more abrasive as it warms.
The bottom line: Harper's has put together a decent Amber here. It won't absolutely wow you but it represents the style very well and I like the heavy malty / bready / caramel flavour here, at least when it's cold. Probably best had by the pint at the bar.
