Our annual Barleywine release in late November has been a staff favorite for many years. This batch was finished in the finest Elijah Craig 14-year Bourbon barrels for 3 months. Notes of caramel, toffee and bruleed sugar help balance the rich oak character and strong ABV.

I get lots of charred toffee and brown sugar plus hints of raisin, candied nuts, and vanilla. The barrel character is surprisingly strong for only 3 months of aging, adding a nice layer of booze and an oaky tingle. Good stuff!

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown with almost no head. The nose is dominated by dark fruit, sweet toffee, and a hint of bourbon. A slight molasses note as well.

The taste is fantastic. The barrel stands out right away, which is surprising given that it was only aged for 3 months. Wow. Tons of toffee, bitter oak, slight vanilla, burnt brown sugar, and tons of malts. So smooth!

Deep garnet hued body; dense carbonation; less than one-finger thick head yet dense, creamy, and light khaki colored; nice sheets of foam coat the interior glass. Mild toffee notes with white oak on the nose. Big malt flavor; caramel and light toffee; light brown sugar and vanilla; fairly bold bourbon element emerges halfway through the taste; earthy sweetness. Heavy body; smooth and velvety; fairly intense alcohol warmth percolates through the residual sugars.

This English-styled barleywine is a fine sipper. Just the base beer would have been nice. I would like to try this one with a year or so of aging to see if it would have tamed the barrel-aging a bit. It has some intensity now that being dialed back a bit would round out the character and overall enjoyment of the beer.
