All 7 of the Downtown breweries got together and decided to make a bunch of different Lagers brewed with Colorado grown malts. Our Helles Lager has a touch of Cottonwood Smoked malt added to showcase the delicate malt character this style is known for.

Clear, golden body; moderate carbonation presence; thin, off-white head, lasting; sticky fingers and patches of foam cling to the inside of the glass. Delicate smoke aroma. Very mild malt backbone; solid presence of smokiness but not overbearing; lightly smoked meat; note of phenolic bitterness. Light to medium-light body; glass smooth; a touch of subliminal dryness.

I love a good smoked beer. This one really grew on me as it opened up. It's not very complicated in anything, yet brings out a finely balanced light smokiness that complements the delicate helles lager base beer. It appears the smoked malt is Cottonwood Smoked malt (likely from Colorado Malting Alamosa). If so, I'd say it has a keen similarity to beechwood smoked malts.
