Aged with patience for 3 months in former Cognac barrels from the South of France, this English-style Barleywine contains multitudes of layers of malt forward structure, complexity and depth. Enlivened by the aromas and flavors from these special casks, each sip reveals a delicious new dimension of this rich, silky and warming alchemy. Brewed in celebration of our 30th Anniversary as Colorado Springs’ oldest brewery!

Pours a clear, dark reddish brown color; thin, light khaki colored head, long lasting. Beautiful aroma; rich, sweet, dark roasted grains; light brown sugar; soft, earthy Fall / Winter spiciness on the nose. Excellent flavor; brown sugar and roasted grains with a sense of roasted chestnuts; slight spiciness; dark, dried fruit notes; leather and tobacco; mild booziness. Heavy body; crisp with a slightly chewy residual sugar component; some warming alcohol notes permeate everything.

The brewers at Phantom Canyon have long made some excellent barleywines, primarily English inspired ones. They don't go overboard with adjuncts or crazy barrel aging although they may use some of those techniques. This 30th Anniversary beer is phenomenal. I am so tempted to see if I can get another bottle or two of this to share with others (I have one more already that I likely will keep to myself or bottle share locally). I think a bit of age on this one may do this beer well although it is quite enjoyable now.
