On tap at the brewpub; served in a 10 ounce snifter.
Phantom Canyon's beers--especially The Phantom IPA and Peated Porter--are dependable, so this mild and bland barleywine was a disappointment. Good lacing and legs around the glass.
A: Sanguinal (venal blood) with hints of gray and a nice, off-white head. This was one of the cloudier and more attractive looking (if mysterious) barleywines I've seen.
S: This was served too cold and the bouquet was totally obliterated/absent. As it warmed some, I got very light hints of carmel.
T, M, D: Bland overall. The rich carmel and alcohol flavors that I expect/demand in a barleywine are totally absent. There are faint hints of cocoa, but this doesn't do enough to redeem the brew. It has a syrupy body with no flavors to back it up. This makes it like drinking incredibly viscous (and strong) water. I wasn't even able to finish the snifter.
Take a pass and stick to Phantom Canyon's better brews.
