easily the best beer I had on my visit to phantom canyon. the pour from the cask is just sensational, with a matted black luster and a short but persistent chocolate brown head. the nose is definitely smoky, peaty like a good scotch, and refined in its roasted malt character. the taste is much more tame on the peat, and this is not a smoked beer per se. those elements take a back seat to dark roasted English barley malt, and bitter dark chocolate notes, as well as a pleasant ale yeast imparting some bready depth. feel is soft as a pillow from the ask, and the cellar temperature allows the flavors to fully develop right from the first sip. this is an expertly made beer, far better than anything I expected to encounter at phantom canyon. I wish I could say the same for their hefeweizen... this however, was a splendid twist on a porter, and a beer I would drive back to the springs to drink again.
