like their export stout, i also thought this one was excellent, and an awesome compliment to a hearty and heavy classic sunday roast, this context really increased enjoyment of what actually is a pretty basic beer. its matte black from the bottle with a luxurious head on it and nice retention. aroma has some roast and unexpected hop bitterness together, a little more robust than expected, but still with a sort of classic roasty dry stout complexion, coffee notes and some char with it, less yeast influence than in many of their others. i would venture this has some oats or something in it, as there is a lot of creamy body for its low alcohol content and relative dryness, good structure here, palate coating without being heavy. there is a great earthiness to this that i really like, grain derived, and well supported by the slightly piney and bitter hops, not quite black ipa, but its pushing in that direction. super smooth in feel, nice with the fatty meats, wintery but not too intense for warmer weather either. they did a killer job with this, excellent malt depth and liberally hopped. yum!

BBE june 15 2016 ABV 6% 330ml bottle from ales by mail

Appearance (Look) = 6%
dark brown red, red brown head

Smell = 24%
piney pacific northwest hops, no malt.

Taste = 40%
chocolate and roasted grains, bitter astringent on the finish. dry. I prefer my stouts sweeter but I understand what is going on here and appreciate it

Mouthfeel (Feel) = 10%
pretty creamy yet dry. somewhat astringent.

Overall = 20%
I think this could grow on me. I get the bitter and roasted notes. I can appreciate the grain and the hops. I wish there was an increased maltiness.

• Look – 4.75 – great looking jet black color with great head. Initially an inch or so, but then settles down to a thick edge layer with a small coating on top. Hard to find a stout that looks much better.
• Smell – 4.0 – Roasty.
• Taste – 3.0 – Not much to my liking but I’m not a fan of American stouts. It’s roasty all the way with maybe some smoke, and a little crisp, probably the right taste for the style, but just not my favorite style.
• Feel – 3.5 – Medium bodied, but excessive carbonation up front makes it appear to have a lighter mouth feel. This attribute settles down after a while.
• Overall – 3.0 – Just not a big fan of American stouts, and don’t like roastiness or smoke in any beer unless they are in the background. But for those who like this style, this beer is made for you!

330ml bottle bought from Lighthouse Wines, Jordanstown...

Poured deep black with only the slightest hint of brown around the edges when held up to the light... mocha tan head poured pretty big and thick then faded slowly to thin covering... some good sticky lacing coats the glass throughout...

Aroma - Roasted malts, chocolate notes, light smoky traces, some light treacle sweetness, quite strong nuttiness, some creosote hints, black coffee, some peppery hops, cardboard traces...

Taste –- nicely roasted malts - not too much bitterness... some fruitiness (black cherries, some blackcurrents), faint smoky hints, toasted nutty sweetness, light dustiness, some burnt dark brown sugar sweetness, nice peppery / spicy hop notes...

Feel - Pretty smooth and creamy with just a little spritziness coming through... pretty full bodied... A very drinkable stout at 6% - could happily quaff a few of these in an evening...

Overall - A very good, nicely balanced and very drinkable stout... definitely recommended...

This is a solid hoppy stout weighing in at 74 IBUs. Rich Black Color.. hints of chocolate and rich malt. Semi-sticky mouthfeel but the hops cleaned that feeling up. They use Chinook, Columbus, and Cascade hops. Has a bit of expresso. The head had great retention and the smell was strong and piney with some malt. The 6% alcohol made it a solid drinkable beer. There's a lot going on though, so it's hard to just "drink".
