I LOVE it when my local, in-person trader, tone77, stops by for a pick-up & drop-off! He brings his spent CANs FFT to Jeff Lebo & leaves me a whole buncha stuff to sift through until our next get-together. This time, it included a Brazilian beer & I do not believe that I have had a beer from there before. My current count is 68 countries, so if the counter moves after this one, I will know.
From the CAN: A map of Brazil with "Curitiba - We are here". Pretty cool! 406 km south of Sao Paulo, BTW.
Upon Crack!ing the vent open, I got some immediate foaming through the vent. I gave it some calming time to see if it would settle & while it abated slightly, it still seemed rather active in terms of its carbonation. Time for a slow, gentle Glug! I was surprised when I only got just a little better than a finger of foamy, fizzy, light-tan head that rather quickly reverted to wisps. Hmm. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with NE-quality clarity & garnet highlights. Nose had a noticeable sourness to it, like a Flanders Red. I read that this was made with a rum barrel-fermented coffee, which may account for the odd smell. Mouthfeel was kind of thin, not watery, but no great shakes. The taste was an odd mélange of flavors. I could definitely taste coffee, but along with a light chocolaty flavor was a slight sourness that made it taste kind of jarring. It was not bad, per se, but was kind of unexpected, despite the smell as I lifted the glass to my nose. Warming, it took on a light spiciness which I Cannot acCANt for, but it just added to the weirdness. Finish was very dry, almost to the point that I needed water to acCANpony it, as I usually do with Tart/Sour/Wild Ales. It left me scratching my head at its unusual nature, but it was worthwhile, even if as nothing more than a novelty. YMMV.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a very dark brown color with a 1 inch head. Smell is strong of black coffee. Taste is mild coffee, roasted malts, an unusual sourness throughout. Feels medium/light bodied in the mouth and overall is an ok beer, but nothing special.

Pours a clear dark brown color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Decent retention and decent lacing. Smells of strong coffee (not fresh), roasted malt, slight sweet malt, slight alcohol, and hint of hops. Fits the style of an American Brown Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong coffee (not fresh), roasted malt, slight sweet malt, slight alcohol, and hint of hops. Overall, average appearance, aroma, and body, with the coffee being unpleasant.

12 oz. can
Pours cloudy maroon with a creamy frothy light khaki colored foam head. Smells like green peppers, woody green coffee, mild dark fruits, nutty molasses, caramel, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Taste is a bit light with some bell peppers, fresh green woody coffee beans, some dark fruits, nutty molasses, caramel, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels creamy and slick, a bit watery and chalky, light-medium bodied with moderate low carbonation. Overall a nice brown ale with coffee.
