Bo's Solar Eclipse Imperial Stout

Originally reviewed March 31, 2007. Pour from a 12oz Bottle. Burning aroma with light almonds and rushing juniper alcohols. Crisp and bold. Pours deep black with a yellow film, not much head and oil black centre. Flavor develops from a fiery alcoholic core to a nuanced nicely roast built body, a mouthful of piney hops and a cascade of muddled nuts, maybe hazlenut and caramel. Toasty and roasty. Not as potent as one would expect. But packs a number of clean, appreciable features into a real whopper. In the vein of Dark Lord. Thanks Sean!

This is a truely amazing creations from Bo's. Poured out to a deep pitch black color that reminded me it was time to change the oil in the car. Small head of deep brown coffee foam. Aromas were complex and would make a great scratch-n-sniff sticker for a beer geek; Roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, caramel, vanilla bean, bourbon. Wow. Taste was very full bodied and again, quite complex; Roasted malt mixed with warming alcohol, with traces of coffee and earthy wood. Afterthoughts of vanilla, spice and strong notes of sweet molasses. Mouthfeel was full and dense, like a black hole of beer, so to speak. Drinkability was darn good for a 22.5 ABV beer. Totally recommended. This is perhaps the ultimate winter warmer. World Class.

Pitch black, dark brown head. Heavily sweet, massive molasses nose. Mild sandy aspects from earthy hops try to balance is all, but the desserty oatmeal and biscuity cereals are just too strong to handle. Nutty palate, oily, tary and soy saucy. Heavy bitterness, I wonder how many IBUs this can be.. Extreme sweetness, long burning alcohol shot finish. I appreciate the efforts to create extraordinary beers, but so long that we’ll be left with oily lifeless uncarbonated palates and more artificial sweeteners than pure malt flavors, Bos won’t be up there with my favorite breweries. I am truly impressed by their head retentions considering their high alcohol levels though.. truly impressed.
