At 32 years of age, this bottle was tasted tonight with a dinner of bbq ribs and an aged Gouda, and held it's own next to fuller-bodied Leffe Brune. Pretty much the same as Woosterbill's much more educated 2012 review, with perhaps a bit less of the spices and a bit more of a chocolatey-Porter flavor. Just amazing to be still drinkable in 2023! But since I just turned 77 myself, it's time to drink up all my older bottles, from ale to Scotch and Armagnac... 8;)

12oz bottle into a Weyerbacher tulip. Gigantic thanks to Ernie for bringing this crazy-old beer to last night's tasting. Wow.
A: Clear persimmon body with a couple fine white bubbles. Very nice for a beer that's damn near old enough to drink itself legally...
S: Intriguing balance of sherry-like oxidation and classic Christmas spices: lots of nutmeg, as well as some cinnamon and allspice. Excellent.
T: Huge with the spice, and not much else. A touch of sweetness on the tail end. Tasty, but not as complex as the nose.
M: Fairly weak. Light body with no carbonation.
D: The fact that it's still drinkable at all is remarkable. The fact that it's still tasty is unbelievable.
Notes: This might have been the surprise of the night. Expectations for a 20 year old, low ABV beer like this couldn't have been lower, and yet it was a remarkably enjoyable brew. And it went great with the wild boar prosciutto! Thanks again, Ernie.
Cheers!

Originally reviewed November 23, 2006. 12 Oz Bottle. Aroma is incredibly peculiar, with woodly light molasses and edges of seasoned, seared pig fat. Light floral, tending towards lavender. Pour of beautifully clear mahogany, with orange fringes and a ruby core. Rim of whitish. This actually built a bit of a head at 15 years, and had a distant wisp of excruciatingly perfusive carbonation. the woody and smoky tones dominate in the flavor. A really long draw of old apple pipe tobacco. Thehops have gotten a little strange, maybe a touch disoriented. However, a subtle minty and leafily chocolate tone in the smack lead me to believe Northern Brewer played a role in this beer. As with all OSAs (at least for me) a bit soapy in the final spicing. Im ecstatic to have tasted a nicely aging vintage beer. Almost perfectly dry at this point. Fading away, I get a wisp of esoteric, little known indian spices and some Tellicherry black pepper. Quite nice, to me.
