1988 vintage opened in 2008 - nearly twenty years old.
Appearance - Pours the color of chestnuts, a bit watery around the edges. No head forms, though there's still a bit of carbonation present.
Smell - Caramel, molasses, tree bark and a bit of old leather. Spices are still noticeable though a bit ambiguous at this point.
Taste & mouthfeel - Caramel again, truly the dominant characteristic, with a mild fruitiness beneath it. The flavor is similar to that of a tawny port, but significantly lighter in body and sweetness. Surprisingly little oxidation for a bottle this old. A bit of peppery spice appears in the otherwise clean finish. The mouthfeel is quite thin, even a bit watery; a far cry from fresh bottles of this brew.
