Bistro-Brasserie Les Soeurs Grises "APPÂT-SI-NOIR"
on tap at the brewery on 7 Octobre 2014
$5 / verre

Notes: Black-brown body beneath a tan head. Chocolatey-roast is full on in the aroma, and remains solid in the flavor with velvety chocolate and coffee. Firm bitterness. Only background hops. Some red fruit, some nuttiness, some oats. Lingering soft roasty finish. Silky smooth.

Serving: On nitro tap

A:
Pours a beautiful black with nice cascading brown head. Three fingers of dark creamy froth drops to a film. Meh retention; some scattered lacing. (4)

S:
Coffee and cream, nuts, toasted nuts, brown sugar. (4)

T:
Vaguely roasty with coffee, burnt nuts, bitter chocolate, cola. (4)

M:
Smooth as silk right out of the tap but eventually pretty thin. Light plus body with a quick finish, very sessionable flavor-wise, light carbonation. (3.75)

O:
Very good 'light' stout.
I often judge places based on their brown ales or oatmeal stouts. It might be arbitrary but I feel like these are two of the beers that often either are super boring or have too much going on. This one is a very nice example. Rich and cream it strikes a great balance between the slight milky sweetness and the coffee flavors. It is easy to drink, smells alright and is pretty tasty. It could be a little more substantive in the palate (the nitro helps, but not tons), but other than that pretty good. (4)

A - Pours pitch black, thumb of creamy mocha head with solid retention.
S - Solid cocoa malts, coffee and malted milk, heavy grains and toasted oatmeal on the finish.
T - Nice milk chocolate, hints of espresso, loads of rich roasted malts, lots of oatmeal coming through and a hint of leafy greens on the finish.
M - A tad thin, though still creamy and smooth.
O - A tasty oatmeal stout that delivers a solid dose of flavour, nicely balanced and is easily sessioned. The mouthfeel was a tad thin, but the nitro tap gave it a creaminess that helped to make up for the shortfall.
