A-Typical dark porter look, a lot of head accompanied the pour.

S- Mostly a roasted malt and coffe smell. Not much in the way of rum, or any barrel aging present in the nose.

T- The first thing I taste is the rum barrel. Then I get an odd sourness that follows it. It lingers on the back of my tounge. Not really what I am looking for in a porter. The sourness overpowers any other flavors that are trying to come through.

M- Highly carbonated for a porter, takes away from the smooth/creamy mouthfeel that I usually associate with this style. Very thin body as well.

This is my first non american wild ale or saison from SARA. I was thankful to recieve it, but it needs work.

Enjoyed from the #proper glassware, so you know you can trust this review.

Pours inky black with brown edges, big three fingers of foamy tan head. A slow pour but I like a good head and a nice cap of foam sticks around the whole time.

The aroma doesn't quite jump out of the glass, but there's dark chocolate, wood spice, dark fruit, red wine acidity, coffee, and a light medicinal/funk twang.

Takes a while to open up, roasted barley and dark chocolate come out first with some spice from the barrel and earthy hops. There's a light lactic tartness that lessens as it warms, with more vanilla and rum spice showing up late to the party. The finish is lasting and on the drier side, with plenty of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, molasses and honey.

The mouth is on the leaner side for the style but appropriate for the the abv, a bit sticky and balanced by that acidity.

An interesting take on Chavez, with the roast and chocolate flavors I'd expect but the tart profile more like a wine barrel. Certainly not bad taken as it is and it has a funky complexity, but maybe a bit of fresh Chavez blended in could liven it up and add some body. Looking forward to round 2, hopefully with Vanilla Joe.
