Until now, I haven't had a very good grasp of what others are describing when they talk about a "jammy" beer. But now I get it!
I happened to taste Adjunct Professor blind, and I was slightly concerned when I happened to pop the cap - the beer is practically black, so I expected a stout, particularly given the consistency of the beer. It pours with a moderate thickness - it doesn't coat the glass, but neither can you see through. It coats your mouth fairly thoroughly. My cause for concern, though, was the smell - it's pungently sour, smelling like fresh berries. I recently was able to try Prop 15, and immediately flashed to that experience - the beer was almost black, but smelled and tasted like a rich red wine, like a merlot. This struck me in the same way.
The boysenberries and black currants are incredibly unique - this is my first beer with boysenberries, and it's quite good. My aunt used to can her own preserves and I loved boysenberry preserves. This beer has that very same jammy quality of those preserves. Love it - it brings back pleasant memories.
Fantastic beer - I need to make a point of hunting down more Sante Adairius beers.
