Formerly known as Young Lions Svec Altstadt
Things are rarely either Black or White. In 1948 a young, educated entrepreneur named Jaroslav Foukal was forced from his home in Czechoslovakia, blown across the North Atlantic by the cold winds of Communism. He fled for his survival: businesses were being seized; intellectuals jailed. Landing in Montreal with little more than a suitcase, he began the long journey of building a life in a vast new country, far from home. The life he eventually built was not only successful, but if you fast-forward two generations, his grandson is now our Head Brewer! For that we are grateful, so thank you Jaroslav, for your perseverance, your resilience, and your fortitude!

Clear dark amber color. Poured a short head that dropped back to a patchy skiff in a minute. Medium flow of tiny bubbles from the bottom of the glass. Left long strings of lace.
Dark roasted malt smell. Light sweet floral scent. An earthy yeast smell. Swirling the glass kicked up a light barnyard for a few seconds. The sweet floral was stronger after the barnyard went away. Then back to the original smells.
Flavor starts with a moderate level of medium roasted malt. Slightly sweet. The floral pops up after a few seconds and hangs around. Very light yeast. Mild bitters. A hint of coffee. The aftertaste is mostly the same, except the floral seems to pick up a small amount of mint. Just a bit more bitter as it fades down.
Medium-mild tongue tingling. It bursts into a large bubbled foam quickly. A bit gummy towards the end.
Interesting flavor profile. I assume the strong florals are coming from the hops. Overly carbonated, so there is very little fluid to drink; it is mostly large bubbles. Not sure I would want to drink this on a regular basis; it's not really my cup of tea.

Hoyne Brewing 'Svec Czech Half Dark Lager' @ 4.9% , served from a 473 ml can , part of the 'Young Lions' series of beers
A-pour is a light amber from the can to a clear amber in the glass with a small beige head leaving a fine spotty lace
S-pungent & smelly
T-clean & crisp half dark lager
MF-decent carbonation , medium body , kinda filling
Ov-still not a fan of this style
