12.7oz bottle received through the good offices of JayO'Rear. The rear label describes the beer as:
"Sour ale (fermented with mixed cultures) blended from rum barrel aged red saison and foudre aged oud bruin, then laid to rest in sherry casks and wine puncheons with cherries for an additional 14 months. Notes of old world oak, caramel, and cherry bark. Enjoy by 2025."
Also according to the rear label, this was bottled in September, 2018, and was one of 1255 bottles.
Poured inti a teku, this was a dark btown color that took on a hue somewhere between ruby and copper when held up to direct light. Large, creamy, beige colored head. Lots of lace.
Funky, fruity, acidic, and earthy nose. Big blast of tannins to this.
Cherry flavor is more dominant up front than in the nose, but it's definitely part of a blend of flavors. Seems like the funk and the oud bruin outweights the saison characteristics. Ends on a note somewhere between barnyard and vinegar. I'm really not a sherry drinker, so I can't really pick up what the sherry cask aging contributes with such a heady mix, but in the background around midway through, I definitely pick up the woodsy sweetness of the rum barrels.
Fairly coating and somewhat puckery mouthfeel.
Has a big impact on the tastebuds, so it probably wouldn't do to pair this up with food of a delicate nature. I classified it as a brett beer rather than a fruited sour because BA only allows for Fruited Kettle Sour as a choice, and this ain't no kettle sour. A complex but tasty beer of a type I'm still not particularly well versed in, but I'm damn glad to have had this. Thanks, Jay!
