Matte black with a half finger of creamy-looking, dark mocha head that has solid retention for this series before settling into a wisp and soupy crown.
Huge cherry in the aroma, layered on top of wine grapes, dark chocolate malts, and clear alcohol.
The cherry bomb carries over to the taste as well, as does a little grape. Creamy chocolate, bitter bakers cocoa and some light walnut are all present in the base. Definite alcohol heat, but there’s a lot of flavor and feel for it to compete with.
Full bodied, creamy, chewy mouthfeel, with just a little tight carbonation barely cutting through.
This is one we’re the total is less than the sum of the parts, to me. The big cherry is awesome in its own right, but isn’t in perfect harmony with the base just yet. Maybe sitting on it for six months (or cuveeing 50/50 with regular Ralphius) will meld the flavors better? Still a big step above most imperial stouts on the market.
