Man what a ride that Shotgun Wedding is on- imperializing its strength, rum barrel aging and then slapping it with bushels upon bushels of raspberry, strawberry, blackberry and blueberry for a collection of tastes that tease with tartness, satisfy with savory and round the flavor with robust balance.
Dark brown with a tinge of tawny and rusty glimmers about the edge, the beer's low-lying skirt of froth folds rapidly back into the beer. Tantalizing aromas of chocolate, molasses, berries, sherry, rum and leather roll onto the nose while the first sip is rich with booze-soaked sweetness.
Port and sherry share a sugar-coated strength that's melded by the rich batter-like bittersweet chocolate, seared toffee and molasses flavors. Acidity of berries help to break up the cakey body while bringing the brightness of fruit for a complex edge. Oak, spice and a hint of coffee roast close the show with a calm and earthy balance.
Lavishly full on the palate, the ale is creamy and weighted- resting on the tongue like sugary liquor, warming the senses and delighting the taste with a final frame of cobbler and rhubarb with their own special tartness and succulence.
