What a difference that three years of patience can make. Embarking upon their eleventh birthday, Country Boy Brewing rolls out a vintage 8th Anniversary version of their Imperial cocoa, vanilla and macadamia stout.
Jet black, basically onyx-bright and floating a creamy trickle of foam, the espresso-looking stout swoons the nose with a robust perfume of savory sweetness, dark chocolate, dark fruit, candied nuttiness, coffee and cream. Just as decadence as it smells, the flavors roll onto the early palate with a juicy burst of caramelized malts. Seeming of molasses, light sherry, brown sugar and savory burnt cream, the flavors prove truly seductive.
Continuing to saturate the middle palate with malt sweetness, more robust flavors of espresso, bittersweet chocolate, heavy toast and campfire keep the session dark and robust. As nuanced dark fruit flavors of plum, fig and dates come with a grilled character, hints of sherry and port begin to show. Heading into finish, the soothing flavors of macadamia and vanilla soften the late palate against the bitter roast of grain and hops.
Full bodied, sultry and off-cloying, the stout is a fully mature, perfectly balanced and savory session with the most modest powder-fine finish. A linger of sweet roast and light sherry keep the complex, decadent and sultry flavors extending with great satisfaction in aftertaste.
