"If you don't like Chai, put down this bottle and walk away.
We first brewed Chai Porter 3 years ago as our 3rd release. It was the 1st collaboration in Houston history, more aggressive than anything ever brewed by a Houston brewery, and I was super proud of it. Then a guy at a festival crushed my ego, calling it the worst ale he had ever had. I asked, “Do you like Licorice?” “No.” “Well, it has Star Anise in it… wait, how do you like Chai Tea if you don’t like Anise?” To which he responds, “I ing hate Chai." Good for you, Buddy. Chai Porter is available in 22 ounce wax dipped bottles.Sweet upfront with a hard turn to savory in the middle and a big, dry black pepper kick on the finish. It ages wonderfully - try it again in 6 months!"
Tasting Notes: Sweet upfront with a hard turn to savory in the middle and a big, dry black pepper kick on the finish. It ages wonderfully - try it again in 6 months!
Initially released as "Secessionist #2 (Chai Porter)" in 2012.

Chai Porter 2020 from Buffalo Bayou. On room temperature shelf at Total Wine, Selma, TX. $12.98 (Including tax)/22 oz bottle ($ 0.590/oz). Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 15/6/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated bottle. Served at 46.2 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 51.2 degrees.
Appearance – 3.
First pour – Deep Amber (SRM 15), clear.
Body –
Head – Average (Maximum 3.5 cm, aggressive center pour), wheat, medium density with rocks, short retention, diminishing to a 2 mm crown, and a thin, rocky cap. Second pour produces a 1.6 cm dense head.
Lacing – Poor. Only a couple of chunks of tiny bubbles remain on the glass.
Aroma – 3 – Begins with weak spiciness but NOT chai (mostly cardamon), no hops, faint roasted malt, no yeast, no star anise.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins with a bit of roasted malt, some spice (cinnamon and clove), no hops, no yeast, and no ethanol (8 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. A bit of chai appears on the aftertaste but still no star anise. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3 (After deducting 0.25 point for undated personal container) While the primary spices of chai are present in either the aroma or flavor, they fail to blend into the desired whole, while the star anise is totally absent, at least to my olfactory and taste structures. Appearance and palate are typical for porters.

Poured a pitch black color with a finger width brown foamy head. Decent retention and lacing. Chai tea is definitely there in the aroma with coffee and dark malts. The taste is similar. Chai tea and dark malts with licorice and chocolate at the end. Medium to heavy bodied. Somewhat creamy. Mild carbonation. I am not a fan of chai tea, but this worked.

Perhaps the worst porter I have ever had. I hate anise and there is a definite black licorice taste. Won't buy again.
