Dark, dark brown with a nice beige foam in the Gulpener tulip. Big fruity, smokey aroma. Just a whiff of wood ashes. Silky mouthfeel. Poured from the 32 oz jug filled at the brewery in Bellingham.
Very sturdy smoke flavor, but not overwhelming. Burnt malt but a lot of roasted, grainy taste. Seriously rich with a malty sweetness that seems to be amplified by the smoke flavor. Apples and pine. Quite a powerful flavor, but mellow and smooth. Then there's the chocolate in the aftertaste. Overall a dark and eye opening brew but very sippable.
