I've made it a recent goal of mine to review as all the brews that come out of Kulshan, they never seem to disappoint. Poured from 500ml bottle. At 23 ibu and 5.3abv, this is a newer release from this brewery.

L: Out of the bottle at a nice 34-37 srm with an inch off-white solid head. Appears the viscosity of a lager. Totally opaque with amber tint on the meniscus.

S: Malty bread crusts with secondary chocolate. Very low notes of toffee. Seemingly regimented from one scent to the next, all toasted dark. A trace amount of sweetness, A chocolate chip toasted bagel, straight up.

T: Oh wow, that was incredible. Malted barley upfront followed by an intense dark chocolate, that roasts over time, eventually ending with a cooked graham cracker. Bitter and the start and finish, but sweet midway. The balance is all there and the specific tastes are superbly dominant for their moment.

F: Light-Medium bodied that starts astringent and then sweetens, then smooths out again. Lowly carbonated with a gentle booze finish.

Kulshan's Schwarzbier may be my favorite to date. It is not insanely complicated as far as flavors go, but each in itself is so bold and balanced by the others (roasted barley, dark chocolate to graham cracker) that I crave more. It isn't heavy like so many chocolate dark beers, and stays true to the black lager style in look and feel. They could have easily added a fruit element, but I am glad they didn't, as it would get heavier and feel more like a porter than dark lager and there is already a background sweetness holding it together. This is about as easy drinking as a Pils, at 23ibu, and much more stimulating on the palate. If you spot this at your local bottle shop, make the right choice and imbibe.

Served in 16oz Willi Becher. Poured a lightly transparent black, some red around the edges. The beer had a quarter-inch of light tan head that had moderate retention and light lace.

There was a nice, soft amount of roast at the front of the nose, with a solid malt background.

The flavor profile was pretty similar, solid malts enhanced by solid, yet gentle, roast.

The body was on the light side of medium, smooth, and had a dry finish.

Drinkability was very nice, I can see knocking back a few more of these. Overall, a very nice brew, worth trying if you see it.
