Kulshan Porter is brewed in the Brown Porter style. Deep mahogany in color, the beer is topped with a rich mocha-colored head. The roasted barley aroma is accented with notes of coffee and chocolate. The flavor is smooth and silky with roasty-toasty grains blended with coffee, chocolate and a touch of toffee. The aftertaste is smooth and clean.

Transluscent, deep mahogany brown with a small head and minimal but nice lacing.
Dutch processed cacao and roast in the nose. Inviting aroma.
Flavor reflects those, and is extremely dry with just a hint of coffee and woody smokiness.
Body is reasonably creamy, firm, and true to the style, and the finish lingers nicely.
I wasn't expecting much when I walked into this little neighborhood gem, but I was astounded by their robust and complex RIS, and while this beer isn't quite in that league, it's quite refreshing and flavorful.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a very dark brown, almost black, with just a bit of translucence. The beer had less than 1/4 inch of tan head that had very low retention and lacing.
The aroma was fairly typical, good base grains were featured and the beer had a solid but subtle roast scent. The flavors were pretty similar, good grains doing the majority of the work, and the roast was a bit more pronounced and a bit of a coffee taste lingered on the finish.
The body was good, perhaps a touch thinner than I would have liked, and was smooth & even. Drinkability was good, the beer went easily and quickly. Overall, a nice beer, worth reaching for when you're in the mood for a fuller beer.
