180ml taster at the Clarens Beer Festival.
Served chilled in the festival tasting tulip.
6,2% Abv.
The hop bill consists of Galena, Cascade and Centennial and the beer is at 32 IBU's.
Appearance: Moderately hazed, deep golden amber body, topped by a large, off-white head that lasts well and leaves some good lace.
Smell: Wow, this is far more balanced than I expected - the lightly toasted, caramel malt body is as apparent as the hoppy notes.
Notes include: Grapefruit peel, marmalade, pineapple, light mango, golden raisins, toasted grain, sweet caramel malt and a light leafy/herbal character.
Taste: As with the nose, the flavour is far more balanced than one might expect from an American IPA. The initial flavour is of sweet caramel malt and toasted grain; this slowly fades into hop notes with grapefruit, orange peel, a hint of tropical fruit and a little resin.
The finish is lightly bitter and moderately dry - I guess the restrained bitterness is a plus for most; however a hophead like me needs more!
Mouthfeel: Hammerhead is medium-low bodied and lightly oily, with a medium level of carbonation.
Overall: Hammerhead IPA is a tasty beer and one I would have quite often if I lived in the vicinity of the brewery. I do however, think that bumping up the flavour and bittering hops (50-55 IBU's) would be a huge improvement.
